Summary

The project aims to address the health and socio-economic challenges triggered by COVID-19 in Lao PDR. It endeavors to enhance resilience by providing support to the government and communities. The proposed interventions will take place in the southern provinces of Champasak and Savannakhet, chosen based on their high population, significant numbers of returning migrants, and ensuing WASH requirements. The components of the project are designed for a holistic response, ensuring efficiency and impactful outcomes for diverse beneficiaries, including women and girls, returning migrants, out-of-school youth, students, vulnerable individuals, and duty bearers. Moreover, this approach underscores the cultivation of strengthened synergies with local partners and ongoing interventions.

Background

The COVID-19 crisis, beyond causing tragic loss of life, intensifies poverty, inequality, and impacts vulnerable groups in Lao PDR. Governments grapple with dual challenges: curbing the pandemic and managing its economic and social fallout. The crisis, affecting the entire population, disproportionately harms specific groups. Marginalized individuals, facing inequalities in income, gender, disability, and forced displacement, are especially vulnerable. The virus deepens socio-economic, demographic, and gender disparities. It is, therefore, of paramount importance to assist people and communities in vulnerable settlements to provide adequate social protection and compensation to restore livelihoods, health, and well-being.
