This issue paper explores the challenges and opportunities of urbanization in Lao PDR, focusing on integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) in urban planning. By examining the theoretical underpinnings of Generative AI, this paper aims to identify strategic entry points for leveraging AI to enhance urban planning and management, thus fostering smarter, more resilient, and inclusive urban environments in Lao PDR.
In March, UN-Habitat Lao PDR in collaboration with various Lao government departments hosted an AI seminar focused on the development and application scenarios of artificial intelligence (AI) and the future prospects of creating smart cities in Lao PDR. The event gathered policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss the transformative potential of AI in urban planning, infrastructure, and public services. The seminar provided a platform for sharing knowledge, best practices, and innovative solutions that could drive Lao PDR towards becoming a technologically advanced and sustainable smart city.
